Come to Galilee for that… these unpeopled deserts, these rusty mounds of barrenness, that never, never do shake the glare from their harsh outlines, and fade and faint into vague perspective; that melancholy ruin of Capernaum: this stupid village of Tiberias, slumbering under its six funereal palms…. We reached Tabor safely …. We never saw a human being on the whole route.

Nazareth is forlorn …. Jericho the accursed lies a moldering ruin today, even as Joshua’s miracle left it more than three thousand years ago: Bethlehem and Bethany, in their poverty and their humiliation, have nothing about them now to remind one that they once knew the high honor of the Savior’s presence; the hallowed spot where the shepherds watched their flocks by night, and where the angels sang, “Peace on earth, good will to men,” is untenanted by any living creature… Bethsaida and Chorzin have vanished from the earth, and the “desert places” round about them, where thousands of men once listened to the Savior’s voice and ate the miraculous bread, sleep in the hush of a solitude that is inhabited only by birds of prey and skulking foxes.

Mark Twain, 1867.

The idea that the Jews who began immigrating to Judea in the late 1800’s stole land is laughable. The land was empty and infertile. What land that they did need in inhabited areas they negotiated for and purchased. At the same time Americans were driving Native Americans on the Trail of Tears, European Jews were going to Judea and peacefully purchasing barren and worthless land from Arabs at exorbitant prices. Again, peacefully.

Not to mention the fact that many large pockets of Sephardic Jews had already existed in the area for over a thousand years.

Oh, and why do I say “Judea” instead of “Palestine?” Because it was the original name for the region. Judea was stripped as the regions title and replaced by “Palestine” only because Romans who entered the region did not take well to ruling over a land named for its Jewish inhabitants. Jews were robbed of the regions name, not “Palestinians.”

Twain in Tesla’s lab.

An American loves his family. If he has any love left over for some other person he generally selects Mark Twain.

Substitute “damn” every time you’re inclined to write “very”; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.

My New Years Resolution is going to be to write better. I have always been very damn good at writing, but there is always room for improvement. So, writing goals for this year? I am done using contractions unless they are being used for the purpose of shortening a tweet. I read recently that you can spot fake Thomas Jefferson documents by the use of contractions. He did not use them. Good writers generally do not, so why should I? Yes it may be easier to write “don’t” instead of “do not” but when you read what you have said back to yourself the latter option will usually sound better.
My other goal, in a broader sense, will be to write more. The last few months have been a drag with school. I’ve rarely picked up a pen for anything other than the study of law. That needs to change; if not for my writings sake then for my sanity. I love to write and thus I should do so more often. I have always said that I have ideas for books and intend to write at least one. This should be the year I do it. I am capable of it, so why not? I will not be doing it for the sake of publishing or anything like that, but instead for myself. I need to push myself to new limits and this is will be one way of doing so.
