Substitute “damn” every time you’re inclined to write “very”; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.
- Mark Twain
My New Years Resolution is going to be to write better. I have always been
very damn good at writing, but there is always room for improvement. So, writing goals for this year? I am done using contractions unless they are being used for the purpose of shortening a tweet. I read recently that you can spot fake Thomas Jefferson documents by the use of contractions. He did not use them. Good writers generally do not, so why should I? Yes it may be easier to write “don’t” instead of “do not” but when you read what you have said back to yourself the latter option will usually sound better.
My other goal, in a broader sense, will be to write more. The last few months have been a drag with school. I’ve rarely picked up a pen for anything other than the study of law. That needs to change; if not for my writings sake then for my sanity. I love to write and thus I should do so more often. I have always said that I have ideas for books and intend to write at least one. This should be the year I do it. I am capable of it, so why not? I will not be doing it for the sake of publishing or anything like that, but instead for myself. I need to push myself to new limits and this is will be one way of doing so.
